Scientific Achievement
- Researchers in the Data Driven Synthesis Science program developed a simple and scalable solution-based process to enable high-capacity Li-ion battery fabrication without the need for critical mineral mining for Cobalt or Nickel
Significance and Impact
- Achieving high-capacity Li-ion batteries without Co and Ni via a novel approach using disordered rock salts (DRX) usually requires energy-intensive solid-state synthesis. Here, a facile, scalable alternative is demonstrated
Research Details
- Combinatorial precursor choice enabled control over the crystallization pathway towards phase-pure DRX
- In situ powder X-ray diffraction provided high resolution crystal phase information and particle size evolution
- Targeted precursor choice maximized elemental intermixing and in turn lead to DRX-based batteries with capacities comparable to solid state references
